The fastest team sport of the world is known to be the sport of ice hockey. In freezing temperatures the ice skates crunch on the ice and well-built men crash into each other, at high speeds bringing the boards to shake. The game is played exclusively in the winter months, but what about when there is actually no real winter in the city with a hockey team?
The answer to this question can be found at the NHL club of the Florida Panthers in the Sunshine State of Florida. In Florida, there is indeed a winter season according to the calendar and Christmas Trees are set up and the houses are typically “American style” decorated with lights, but there is practically never any snow in Florida.
This time of the year, Florida has dreamlike temperatures for Europeans up to 28 degrees, which remind us immediately of the summer in Germany. Fun in the ocean in December is the best.

We left the warm sandy beach to go to the BB&T Center where the Florida Panthers play in the National Hockey League. With a well-cooled car we drive at about 28 degrees to the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs (Canada) and delighted to witness how the sport of ice hockey in these fantastic temperatures garners enthusiasm among the fans.
The stadium is quite fulland it is a duel between Canada (Toronto) and the United States (Florida). At the beginning as usual, the two national anthems are sung and accompanied by thunderous applause for the 13 year old singer until the puck is dropped for the opening face-off.
That evening, the loud Goalhorn sounds six times for the host team Florida Panthers and ends with a 6: 4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. After the game we sit for several minutes in the press box and let the impressions of the best league of the world sink into our minds. It was a great show and very entertaining everything was perfectly organized and highly professional with every detail, there were many activities during the Intermissions for the fans to be involved and various awards (including Natural Talent for a 15 year old student).
After the game we talked with a few leaders of the Florida Panthers and found, that to play for a Florida Team is a very big change! In most other regions of the country it is much colder and the players need to aclimate to the unusual heat when the exit the icerink in Florida. This adaptation of the players happens very quickly and actually each player is very happy to play and live in the Sunshine State.
No snow, no Winter Tires, no scraping ice from the Windshields, the ice is where it belongs, on the Icerink in the Stadium.
